This designation is awarded by a charity and has a legal status meaning that the grounds must be used for recreational purposes in perpetuity.
The name Centenary Fields commemorates those who died in World War I – twenty-two members of Wanstead rugby club died in that conflict. They and thirteen others who died in subsequent wars are remembered on another plaque on the clubhouse.
This year Wanstead – the Herons – celebrate their 125th anniversary and are flying high in their league. Today they beat Epping by 36 points to 10.
