Representatives from London Buses were given a clear message at last week’s External Scrutiny Committee meeting – we want the W12 bus restored to its every-20-minute schedule. Councillors and members of the public pointed out its importance as the only public transport link between the South Woodford and Wanstead area and Whipp’s Cross Hospital. As such it has more significance than the average bus route.
Lib Dem Cllr Gwyneth Deakins also pointed out that it is a vital link with the Victoria Line at times when the Central Line is out of action.
London Buses offered a number of reasons for the change, of which the need to save money and declining numbers of passengers on the W12 seemed to be the main ones. Gwyneth asked them to produce the actual figures showing the times and parts of the route which showed the greatest and least use. The figures are to be provided.
We received no undertaking that the frequency would be changed, only that it is always under review, but the officers at the meeting were probably not senior enough to make decisions to change. We trust that they will report the strength of feeling to their senior management. Until some change is implemented the campaign will go on.
